WHAT'S IN KIMBERLEY'S TREASURE CHEST?

INTERVIEW |  Rachel Abad

We all love a little treasure hunting. The feeling before you set off with your back pack full of life and death necessities like a melted mars bar, 20 year old bandaids we found in the back of Mum’s medicine cabinet and a purple and yellow plastic camera we are not even sure words. But 27-year-old Kimberley Robinson or Kijaro does her own kind of treasure hunting of the vintage kind and boy, does it sparkle.

LESSONS I LEARNT AT SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS

WORDS | Nicole Pires

Before attending my first ever Splendour in the Grass, I scrambled for advice from those older and wiser than me about what to bring and what to do. After going myself, I complied a list of lessons I learnt throughout my experiences.

THE KIMYE COMPLEX

WORDS | Thea Halpin
In the early hours of a Los Angeles Saturday morning a little fetus became a baby; a little life was created that is the conjoined strength of two of the most culturally relevant human beings of the era.  Kim Kardashian—famous for her theatrical efforts of the sideways tango and having the best self-perpetuating marketing scheme ever—welcomed a baby daughter with boyfriend Kanye West. North, yes North West, is about to do for compass directions what Paris Hilton did for the French capital—ruin the results when you Google it.

TEENAGE DREAM

WORDS | Thea Halpin

As another teen icon makes a spectacular fall from grace it seems like the hey-day of 00’s child stars is finally over.  In the last week the world has screamed “WTF?” as child star Amanda Bynes has totally lost her shit.  Bynes, star of such seminal projects as The Amanda Show, What a Girl Wants and She’s The Man, tweeted earlier this week that she would like hip hop artist Drake to “murder” her vagina.  Apart from painting a disgusting mental picture, and grotesque thing to subject people to who were innocently browsing their Twitter feed, it seems as if Bynes is just another in a long list of child stars who have stumbled (and fallen down about 15 flights of stairs) as they enter adulthood.

YOU KNOW THAT I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW

WORDS |  Thea Halpin

You know how in life there are things which you do, that are kind of embarrassing, but then you find out one day that everybody does it—like peeing in pools or taking advantage of the self-serve checkout’s lack of security.  Well this is not one of those things.  I thought it was one of those things that I would admit and everyone would be like “Haha that happens to me all the time as well!”  But no one was like that; and I was left looking like a fucking stalker.

Yet another peril of social media.

CAN YOU KARAOKE

WORDS | Thea Halpin

Karaoke, from the Japanese words ‘kara’ meaning ‘empty or bare handed’ and ‘okee’ meaning orchestra is a popular form of entertainment originating in Japan/form of embarrassment for drunken idiots the world over.  As the story goes karaoke originated in Kobe, Japan when a bar owner had his musical act cancel on him last minute.  Out of desperation he decided to turn on the music and ask the patrons to sing: and so karaoke was born.

My first brush with karaoke was at Amanda Stefan’s 8th birthday party.  She had received an Australian Idol Karaoke Machine (back in the Guy Sebastian years) and we were all going to take turns on it.  Being a group of Year Three children in a pre-iPod age we didn't know all the words to any song and the Karaoke fun hit a low point when Kimberly Lenox sang Advance Australia Fair, as it was the only song we all knew apart from church hymns.  However, with the introduction of moderately excessive alcohol consumption, karaoke and I have reconciled and become the BFFLs we were always destined to be.

RAW SHOWCASE PROVOCATIONS: Part 1

IT'S HOT - SHORT FILM
The evening kicked off with a short film It's Hot by Stewart Reeves written by himself and Sean Dennehey. Dennehey also acted as the main character in the film. The audience were first presented with the image of someone scooping his fingers in a tub of Western Star butter. The noise this made was unparalleled  and I can't imagine anyone not squirming at the thought of gloopy butter under their fingernails. Even more startling, he then proceeds to rub the butter all over his bare chest. The film started with the signature line "It's hot". As the film progressed, it became apparent that it was all in rhyme. The dialogue was witty and well timed and had the audience laughing at its absurdity. It's Hot packed the comical punch that only a short film can deliver.

FINDERS KEEPERS

The Finders Keepers markets held Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th July epitomised all of the wonders Brisbane has to offer . At the charming location, The Old Museum, market stalls filled the big rooms and spilled out onto the outside terrace. The renowned Museum gardens were alive with music, food stalls and many spectators basking in the perfect "winter" weather and sunshine. IZE goes as far to say that Finders Keepers may be the best free market Brisbane has to offer! Whilst there were so many amazing design, arts, crafts and clothes stalls, IZE chose our two favourites of the day.

LEST WE FORGET

WORDS  |   Will Runting

Hearing the loud screams of excited, drunk men a block away, in a park, reminds me of when I was a kid. Not in the drunk or excited sense but in the same tradition of playing cricket on ANZAC Day.
